Solskjaer aims to continue impressive start as Man Utd manager

Image
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aims to continue his impressive start as Manchester United manager at home to Burnley on Tuesday, with the case for him to be appointed permanently seemingly growing by the week. The FA Cup fourth-round victory at Arsenal on Friday took the Norwegian caretaker manager’s record to eight successive wins since taking over from Jose Mourinho before Christmas — a mark that surpasses even the great Matt Busby at the start of an Old Trafford managerial reign. While it appears Tottenham Hotspur’s Mauricio Pochettino remains United’s preferred choice as long-term appointment, the strides Solskjaer is making on and off the pitch make an increasingly compelling case for the 45-year-old to win the job. A fourth-placed finish, and Champions League football next season, were looking a distant dream in the latter days of Mourinho’s reign, but victory over Burnley would lift United level on points with Chelsea, for 24 hours at least. Shackles off Pogba – It is all a...

Former Abia state governor, Orji Kalu, has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was prepared to tackle the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election Kalu spoke on Sunday in an interview with newsmen in his Camp Neya country home in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of the state. The APC candidate in Abia North Senatorial District expressed confidence that the party would have landslide victory in all the elections. The party has the antidote against rigging. We will never allow anybody to rig us out in Abia again. We shall match them force by force and money for money,” he said. He further dispelled the speculation that the president hated Ndigbo, saying that Buhari had done for the area what PDP government could not do in their 16 years. Kalu cited the ongoing rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, Enugu-Onitsha Expressway and the construction of the second Niger Bridge as some of Buhari’s major projects in the area, to buttress his...

APC removes Okorocha as Imo campaign coordinator

Image
The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress has removed the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, as the state coordinator of the party’s campaign council. The decision followed the recommendation of the disciplinary committee set up by the Imo APC over allegations of anti-party activities levelled against the governor and others. The committee chaired by Mathew Omegara had earlier summoned the governor and six others to appear before it. The National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, had said the National Working Committee of the party would meet to consider the Imo APC recommendation that Okorocha should be suspended. What has happened in Imo shows that the APC means business. Once they have complied with all the rules, no problem. When they bring the recommendation to the NWC, we will look at it,” he had said. But a member of the Imo State chapter of the APC told our correspondent on Sunday that Okorocha had already been removed by the NWC...

ASUU tackles Fed Govt over N163 billion varsity funds

Image
THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked the Federal Government to stop distorting facts about funds released to the union and the universities. It said the ongoing strike by the university teachers will still linger owing to a few disagreements between the government and the union on the mode of releasing agreed funds to the universities. ASUU National President Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi spoke with The Nation on the sideline of the Central Working Committee meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), at the weekend. He said the union was not a spending agency of government, adding that the comment credited to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, that N163 billion was released to the union was a distortion of facts. But the Minister of Education Adamu Adamu is optimistic that the ASUU strike may end this week. Adamu stated this during a briefing with reporters in Abuja at the weekend on the proliferation of illegal institutions. ASUU...

Why I live like a young man at 59 – Harry Anyanwu

Image
Being an actor has to do with interpreting diverse roles. For Harry Anyanwu, his most challenging role so far is acting as a pastor. He noted that the role seemed difficult for him at the initial stage, but that it eventually taught him how to pray. “My most challenging movie role was when I had to act as a pastor; it was difficult for me because I didn’t know how to pray and speak in tongues at the time. Interestingly, the role eventually taught me how to pray; and I went back home and taught my wife how to pray. I told her I’d guide her. The role opened my eyes to see the things I had always taken for granted in life. It is good to know how to pray, but individuals have different styles of praying and I have been improving on that,” he told  Saturday Beats. Anyanwu is one of the few elderly men in Nollywood industry that have been able to sustain a healthy relationship with young entertainers as he is usually seen in the company with young musicians and actors. Asked how...

Pogba back in line for Manchester Utd captaincy – Solskjaer

Image
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Paul Pogba is back in line for captaincy duties at Manchester United four months after being stripped of the role by Jose Mourinho,  KweseESPN  reports. Mourinho told Pogba in September he would no longer be considered for the armband but caretaker boss Solskjaer has reversed the decision. He is a leader,” Solskjaer told a news conference on Friday. “He’s a character, he influences people and you’ve seen the videos from France. He cares and he really wants to be successful. “He knows he can’t do it by himself, it’s a team game and he’s a character that brings so many good things with him when he’s enjoying himself, I have to say.” Pogba captained United nine times under Mourinho and in the absence of Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young was named skipper for the first game of the season against Leicester. But just over a month later Mourinho confirmed the Frenchman was no longer “second captain” while insisting there had been “no fall out” bet...

Pogba is Man United captaincy material – Solskjaer

Image
Paul Pogba has the qualities to be captain of Manchester United, according to caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has overseen a dramatic return to form for the World Cup winner. The France midfielder was told in September by then-manager Jose Mourinho that he would never captain the club again, days after an apparent disagreement over tactics. Mourinho denied at the time that there had been any fallout between the pair, having taken the decision to strip Pogba of his role as United vice-captain. The decision was made public days after Pogba appeared to question Mourinho’s approach by telling reporters that United should “attack, attack, attack”. Pogba, who performed erratically for his club over the first half of the season, has scored five goals in six appearances since Solskjaer arrived as interim boss on December 19. The Frenchman made his debut for United’s reserve team when Solskjaer was their manager during the 25-year-old’s first spell at the club. The No...
