Anderlecht sack coach Vanhaezebrouck

Image
Belgium’s most successful side Anderlecht have sacked coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck after a series of poor results, the club announced on Sunday. The 2-1 defeat at newly-promoted Cercle Brugge this weekend was their third in four league games. They sit in fourth place, nine points behind Genk at the top of the Belgian top flight, are without a win since November and have already been knocked out of the Europa League and the Belgian Cup The team hasn’t claimed enough points in the league and we were eliminated from the Belgian Cup and the Europa League too early. We hope to turn our form around,” sporting director Michael Verschueren said. A replacement has yet to be named for the 54-year-old Vanhaezebrouck who led Genk to their only ever league title in 2015.

Latest embarrassment leaves Mourinho running out of time at Man Utd

Image
Manchester United had not lost to Liverpool in the Premier League for eight games and over four years prior to Sunday's 3-1 defeat, but the current chasm between the two sides was exposed as Jose Mourinho's men fell 19 points behind the league leaders at Anfield. Match-going United fans have been reluctant to turn on Mourinho, instead often pointing fingers at executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's reluctance to back the manager in the transfer market this summer or the club's American owners, the Glazer family. However, by the end of proceedings on Sunday, as two deflected Xherdan Shaqiri strikes in the final 17 minutes sealed a thoroughly deserved victory for the hosts, it was Liverpool fans who sarcastically sang "don't sack Mourinho". The Portuguese coach said he accepted responsibility for a fifth defeat of the season that leaves the 20-time champions of England 11 points adrift of even a top-four finish. But he also pointed the finger at ...

NLC to governors: include N30, 000 wage in your budgets

Image
GOVERNORS should include the payment of the new national minimum wage in their 2019 Appropriation Bills, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has counselled. Labour said doing so remained the only to avoid friction and crisis in the New Year, adding that the state governments are buoyant enough to pay the N30, 000 being demanded for workers as minimum wage. NLC President Ayuba Wabba told  The Nation  in a chat that the minimum expectations from workers as the President presents the national budget “is for provisions to be made in the budget for the implementation of the minimum wage.” Wabba, who recently became the first African and the first black man to be elected President of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), described as unfortunate that workers continued to bear the brunt of economic hardship, with nobody fighting their cause whenever the economy improves. He said that governors only say they cannot implement the minimum wage because of how they ...

Resign since you can’t fix economy, Atiku tells Buhari

Image
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign for admitting on Friday that the nation’s economy was in bad shape. Buhari reportedly made the confession during his meeting with the 36 governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday. In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr Phrank Shaibu,  on Sunday,  Atiku said the President’s confession that the economy was in bad shape was not only a  ploy to attract the sympathy of Nigerians but also aimed at getting a soft landing. He said,  “The result, of course, is his confession of failure on the eve of our general elections in the hope that millions of Nigerians, whom he has condemned to poverty and hardship, will give him a clap for failing abysmally. I dare say that President Buhari has miscalculated badly on this matter because Nigerians are simply fed up with him. “The economy has collapsed u...

Onazi backs Eagles to win AFCON 2019

Image
Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi has backed the national team to win the Africa Cup of Nations next year based on the club performances of the team’s players. The Super Eagles missed two editions of the AFCON after they won it in 2013 in South Africa. And  Onazi who was part of that team stated that the mentality of the present crop of players is strong and they have to prove that their trouble-free qualification campaign was not a fluke. “After what happened in Russia it was important for all the players to ensure a return to the African Cup of Nations,” Onazi told BBC Sport. It’s an exciting feeling to achieve that and we can only hope that collectively we can all bring our good club form to the national team.  “The last time I played in the tournament we won it and we as players have to go back again with the mentality to win it, and if we can’t we shouldn’t be there.”  He reiterated his commitment to the Super Eagles against the background comments on his f...
